Leaving a Positive Mark

4/14/2016

Think about your day and ask yourself "Did I leave a positive mark on something today?". Whether it was engaging with a client on a personal level or finishing up a tough project, you were a part of success. This is a great way to reflect on your day. When you leave your footprint on something, people will notice. So do your best to make the lasting impression a positive one.

Here at Flyer Consulting that is our goal: To help leave a positive mark on the community and people around us. We dedicate ourselves to our clients, our team, and our community to try to produce excellent work and overall positive development. Our culture at Flyer Consulting wasn't artificially produced, but rather crafted by the members before us who have helped grow this organization. The students that have spent countless hours to produce well, written deliverables for our clients. The team members that have sifted through financials, websites and data to produce a well thought-out solution. Without these students, our organization would not be where it is at today. I am honored to be a part of a group where excellence has been etched into our culture.

So at this time I would like to give a special thanks to the Senior Consultants who have dedicated so much to this organization. You all have taught me so much in both the business world and in life. I hope one day, I will be able to leave such a positive impact on my successors.

Explaining What Flyer Consulting Does Using the Ten-Hundred Most Common Words in the English Language

3/14/2016

Doing what we do can sometimes be hard to explain.
Some of the people we work with have the same problem too. Have you ever had a conversation where you talk about what you do in the world and been told you use words that are too crazy or hard to understand? I would like to do something to show just how hard it is to explain something using simple words - with the help of The Up-Goer Five Text Editor which will force me to use only the ten hundred most used words (get it?) I will try to explain what we do the best I can and avoid using words that are too huge or long.

Flyer Consulting (those are the only two words I will use that are not one of the ten hundred most used words) is a group of students that gives group of people who work for a business that does not focus on only making money thoughts and ideas on how to do what they do better.

One may ask questions like,

"How do great and better than normal students do something like this?"

"What could you students know that people who work every single day do not know?"

"How would students like you go about doing something like this?"

Those are all good questions and the best way to answer them is to begin with how we begin all of our work which is a meeting with one of those businesses that does not focus on only making money. In this meeting our team listens about any problems that may be happening. We then look at our team at the time and decide if we have the ideas and training to help these groups.

If we find that we can help these groups, we then make a lot of times when we will meet again with the group, finish a given part of the problem and present everything that we have done.

In order to fix these problems we cut it into smaller pieces. We then give each of these smaller pieces a group of small things that are easy to understand and change, which will then give our group quick steps to fix their problems.

The key to our way of doing things is looking up lots of facts, figures, numbers and anything that we can learn about that problem. Our group of students loves doing this - and by doing it we always make good reasons on why what we give to fix the problem is the best fix.

After we put all of those numbers and facts into smaller pieces and put those smaller pieces into one fix for their problem, our team can give the people that we are working with a great group of papers which will help fix their problem!

And that is it (in a nutshell)! I'll go back to using the full spectrum of the English language that is at my disposal now! What a difference! Doing this was in fact very hard and made me use words that are more vague or not exactly correct. While it showed that sometimes hard ideas can be explained in a more simple way - it is also sometimes true that the best way to explain what your organization does may be a mix of technical information, assistance from visual aids as well as keeping an eye on using a simple vocabulary.

What is Flyer Consulting? (Explained by a Basketball Fan)

1/27/2016

With the start of the New Year, our Flyer Consulting team has returned to Dayton, Ohio this week to begin their spring semester at the University of Dayton after a busy winter break. With the beginning of the semester, I have the privilege of writing what will be the first of many Flyer Consulting blog posts.
While you’ll be hearing from many of our 20-student consultant team, I’d like to focus the first couple of my posts on explaining in a bit more detail what Flyer Consulting is and how we serve nonprofit organizations across the country.
Picture
I'm a pretty big fan of basketball - and being a student at the University of Dayton only makes be a bigger fan. Lately the Flyers have seen a lot success, seeing the men's team to the Elite Eight in 2014 and looking strong for this March and the women's team to the Elite Eight in 2015.
In the spirit of basketball and successful teams, I'd like to spend this blog post how Flyer Consulting (FC) is organized from the perspective of a basketball fan.

The Players

FC consists of 20 all-star consultants (think the 1992 USA Men's Olympic Basketball Dream Team) who have diverse skills, perspectives and experiences. Just as there are point guards, shooting forwards and centers in basketball, FC is full of marketing, finance, accounting and other majors. And with any team, there are both experienced and newer members. In Flyer Consulting experienced members are Executive Consultants, newer members are Associate Consultants and the student leaders are known as the Executive Board. All three of these groups consist of the students who work on projects for our nonprofit clients (AKA our Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy).
Flyer Consulting Line-Up

The Game

With the players of our superstar team in mind, what is FC's goal? Winning an NBA Championship? Getting MVP awards? Building a dynasty to rival that of the 1950s-1960s Boston Celtics? Our team at FC likes to dream bigger. Every semester our team assists nonprofits across the country with any business-related issues that they may be having. Fundraising? Marketing? Finance? IT? Our dream team can assist in those areas and beyond. What is our championship trophy or MVP award? Knowing that nonprofit organizations are able to operate better and focus on advancing their mission. In other words, even though our team is made up of Magic Johnson's, Michael Jordan's and Stephen Curry's, when we win and meet our goals, successful nonprofit organizations are the real MVP.
